Prof SH Teoh received his B Eng (1st Hons) and PhD from Materials Engineering Department, Monash University, Australia in 1978 and 1982 respectively. He is presently Professor and Director Centre of Biomedical Materials & Applications (BIOMAT) at the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Executive Member of the NUS Tissue Engineering Program, National University of Singapore (NUS). He was the Founder Chairman of the NUS Graduate Bioengineering Programme (GPBE) from 1999 to 2005 and has helped NUS to attract one of the best cohort and most talented group of graduate students in bioengineering. Prior to these appointments he was the Founder Deputy Director of Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) for two years (1997 to 1998). Prof Teoh has been involved in spinning off two companies namely Osteopore (scaffolds for bone tissue engineering) and QuinXcel Tech (bioreactor). He presently serves as the President and Chairman Board of Directors of Osteopore International presently. It is here that he guided the company to obtain FDA approval and CE mark and in the marketing and distribution of the scaffolds worldwide. The scaffolds have now been implanted successfully in more than 1000 patients.
Prof Teoh's main field of research is in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, applying the principles of materials science and engineering to biomaterials. He is well known for his outstanding contribution to the 3D bioresorbable scaffolds for bone. He did pioneering work in fracture-wear resistant biomaterials. He received the prestigious Golden Innovation Award, Far East Economic Review, and the Institute of Engineers Prestigious Engineering Achievement Award in 2004, for development of the platform technology for scaffolds in bone tissue engineering. His group was ranked 1st in bone tissue engineering scaffolds in World Web of Science 2010. He has a passion for teaching biomaterials engineering. In 2003 and 2004 he was awarded NUS Excellent Teacher. He has supervised more than 60 graduate students, filed 6 patents, given 45 keynote/invited lectures and published more than 300 technical papers.
Prof Teoh contributes significantly to professional bodies. He is presently the Chairman, Asia Regulatory Professional Association (ARPA)-Singapore Academy. He sits in as board of editors Tissue Engineering, Journal of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, Journal of Mechanical Behaviour of Biomedical Materials, Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Research and Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Part H: Journal of Engineering in Medicine.
